Understand what you are buying

An original drawing or painting, a print of an artwork and a card with a special surface treatment are different things. Read the maker’s description of the specific piece. A signature or a one-of-one finish does not automatically mean the image was painted directly onto that card.

For a printed edition, check the stated run size and whether it refers to the artwork, that finish or a particular format. If you see multiple versions, compare their descriptions before assuming they share the same edition.

Look beyond the front image

The reverse, edge treatment and holder are part of the experience of owning a card. A few clear details make it easier to compare pieces without guessing from a single promotional image.

• Identify the artist or maker and the release name.
• Check the materials, dimensions and whether the piece is an original or a print.
• Read the edition and variant details, including any serial number.
• View the front, back and surface from more than one angle where photographs are available.
• Confirm what presentation or protection is included, along with price and shipping timing.

Build a collection you enjoy

You can collect by artist, subject, visual style or release. Start with a budget and a piece you would be happy to keep. A small edition describes supply; it does not promise future demand or a resale price.
